Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging

British Values at Wynndale

At Wynndale Primary School, we celebrate the diversity of our pupils, families and wider community. We are committed to promoting equality, respect and inclusion, in line with the Equality Act 2010, the Prevent Duty (2015) and the Department for Education’s guidance on Promoting Fundamental British Values.

We recognise the multi-cultural, multi-faith nature of the United Kingdom and understand the crucial role our school plays in promoting British Values. This statement outlines some of the activities our children are regularly involved in which support the promotion of a clear understanding of democracy, individual liberty, tolerance of different faiths and beliefs, mutual respect and the rule of law.

Democracy

  • Our school is a democracy in which everyone’s voice is listened to and everyone can make a difference
  • Democratic processes are evident in all classes, with all adults modelling fair behaviour and systems
  • In weekly class briefing sessions, pupils are able to have a voice and share their views on a range of topics
  • Children are involved in Democratic processes e.g. voting for school council members
  • Children design their rewards at the end of term linked to our Wynndale Houses - House Captains are positions in school that support this
  • Children decide on fund raising ideas
  • Children are involved in deciding what path their learning takes in each theme
  • We have links to the local PCSOs who can visit school to educate the children about upholding British laws and the justice system
  • Children take part in debates through the curriculum each term - these are deliberately planned opportunities and can take place in a number of curriculum areas

Individual Liberty

  • Children have key roles and responsibilities in school, such as children who take on the roles of Sports Leaders, Reading Buddies and Librarians, Litter Pickers, Computing Champions, House Captains etc
  • Children are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment
  • As a school we educate and provide boundaries for children to make choices safely. We actively teach this through our PSHE, RSE, Online Safety Curriculum etc.
  • Through our extra curricular clubs and opportunities, children are given the freedom to make choices
  • In RE lessons we promote individual liberty through teaching and questioning about identity, belonging and diversity, as outlined in the Nottingham Agreed Syllabus
  • A strong safeguarding and anti-bullying culture underpins all we do

Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

  • This is achieved through enhancing pupils understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society and by giving them experiences to learn about diversity, understanding and respect
  • Our R.E. curriculum provides a broad and balanced education on a range of faiths, religions and cultures
  • Assemblies and discussions about prejudice and prejudice-based bullying have been reinforced and supported by learning in RE and PSHE
  • PSHE is integral to our whole school ethos and daily life
  • Staff from other countries and visitors from other faiths and cultures share their language and culture with our pupils.

Mutual Respect

  • Our PSHE curriculum embodies values of mutual respect through units of learning such as relationships and being a responsible citizen
  • Respect is embodied within our whole school Behaviour and Relationships Policy
  • PE opportunities, coaching sessions and inter school games promote an attitude of equality and fairness
  • Our Games Crew promote mutual respect between pupils across different key stages as do our Pupil Voice Sessions.

The Rule of Law

  • The importance of laws, whether they are those that govern the class, the school or the country are consistently reinforced throughout the school day
  • We have links with the local police through PSCO and DART programme
  • We have a clearly structured behaviour and relationships policy which all stakeholders understand and follow
  • We regularly review behaviour incidents in school and share these with key stakeholders
  • Assemblies are delivered with a focus on the law e.g. Safety Awareness and E-safety Awareness, Community respect.
  • In RE pupils examine different codes of conduct, understanding right and wrong within a local, national and global scale.

Protected Characteristics at Wynndale

At Wynndale we are committed to providing an inclusive education for all our pupils that recognises the nine protected characteristics stated in the Equality Act of 2010. Through teaching these, our children gain an understanding of the world in which they are growing up in and develop a respect towards people who hold these characteristics.

We teach the protected characteristics in line with our PSHE and Remarkable People Curriculum, and they are taught at an age appropriate level.

The 9 Protected Characteristics are as follows:
