Year 6
Welcome to Year 6!
We are delighted to welcome you to a year full of exciting learning, creativity and memorable experiences with Miss Depledge, Mrs Evans and Mrs Hartshorn. Throughout the year, our topics will take us on a journey through history and around the world.
In the autumn term, our history theme Displaced Families explores the experiences of refugees, helping pupils develop empathy and understanding through thoughtful discussion and writing. In the spring term, we embark on a Road Trip Around America, where children learn about a range of natural and physical features across the continent. In the summer term, we study The Plague, bringing local history and geography to life through our focus on the village of Eyam.
In English, we will explore a range of high-quality texts including The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Holes and The Highwayman, using these to inspire our writing across different genres. In maths, we will build confidence and fluency in key areas such as place value, the four operations, fractions, decimals and percentages, as well as geometry, measurement and problem solving.
Throughout the year, pupils will enjoy a variety of Design and Technology projects, including creating a Christmas tree decoration, making a healthy pizza and designing a steady hand game. In the summer term, children will take part in an exciting enterprise project, where they will use their business and entrepreneurial skills to turn £5 into profit.
Year 6 is a particularly important and memorable year. Pupils will have the opportunity to take part in a residential visit in December, take part in the DART Programme, sit their SATs in May and prepare for the transition to secondary school. There will also be many special events to celebrate their achievements, including our Year 5 and 6 summer production, a leavers’ assembly and the Oscars.
We look forward to a fantastic year of learning, growth and success together!
